Farm to School

The objectives of Nutrition Services Department is to serve healthy meals in school cafeterias, to improve student nutrition and support our local and regional farmers.

The key is to make these fresh options available and to get kids to try new things. Farm 2 School programs link school students and farmers in a way that improves foods offered in schools, educates kids about healthy eating and local foods, and creates income opportunities for farmers supplying to schools.


What is Farm 2 School? 

Farm to school enriches the connection communities have with fresh, healthy food and local food producers by changing food purchasing and education practices at schools and early care and education settings.


Waterford Food & Nutrition makes the connection

We partner with the following farms/farmers: Penzien, Brookwood Fruit, Van Houtte, Oakland County Farmers Market.

We partner with these community/state F2S specialists:  Cultivate Michigan, Center for Regional Food Systems (MSU Extension), MI Farm to School Network, Voices for Good Food Policy, Henry Ford Hospital of West Bloomfield

We partner with the following distributors who commit to sourcing as much MI produce and as many MI products as possible: Cherry Capital Foods,Van Eerden, Lumetta Produce, Gordon Food Service


Fresh and Local Servings

Here are some of the offerings that you will see in our serving lines, in our fresh fruit baskets and on our Farm Fresh Salad Stations: Apples, Arugula, Asparagus, Beets, Blueberries, Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Cherries, Cucumbers, Grapes, Green Beans, Kale, Lettuce (Romaine, Salanova, Iceberg), Melons, Peaches, Pears, Peas, Peppers, Plums, Potatoes, Pumpkins, Radishes, Raspberries, Spinach, Squash, Strawberries, Tomatoes, Watermelons, Zucchini.


Nutrition Education Enterprises

Using a variety of grants, our Nutrition team host farm to school activity assemblies featuring nutrition gurus such as Fuel up to Play 60, Junior Chef, Jump with Jill and the Fresh Food Fairy. We sponsor taste tests throughout the year so that children can try new foods like watermelon radishes, sugar baby watermelon, rainbow carrots and the great variety of apples that are known to Michigan. We take students on field trips to the Oakland County Farmers Market, Henry Ford West Bloomfield Greenhouse, MSU Tollgate Farm and our own school gardens. FARMich carts were developed for our cafeterias to use as mini farmers market stands to educate our children on local Michigan produce.
