Farm 2 School for Fresh Fruits & Vegetables

Farm to School

The objectives of Nutrition Services Department is to serve healthy meals in school cafeterias, to improve student nutrition and support our local and regional farmers.

The key is to make these fresh options available and to get kids to try new things. Farm 2 School programs link school students and farmers in a way that improves foods offered in schools, educates kids about healthy eating and local foods, and creates income opportunities for farmers supplying to schools.

We sponsor taste tests throughout the year so that children can try new foods like watermelon radishes, sugar baby watermelon, rainbow carrots and the great variety of apples that are known to Michigan. We take students on field trips to the Oakland County Farmers Market, Henry Ford West Bloomfield Greenhouse, MSU Tollgate Farm and our own school gardens. FARMich carts were developed for our cafeterias to use as mini farmers market stands to educate our children on local Michigan produce.
